Let's have fun and call contract work, consulting work, and freelance work something that that has meaning. Let's call it something that gets the relationship kicked off in a positive session. Let's call it something that has substance and is going to stick around.
I start with the ideation phase when a seat is taken at the table. This is the designers / teams free space in which to come up with novel, perhaps unconventional, ideas.
It doesn’t matter if these ideas turn out to be plausible or not; what’s important is that you venture beyond the obvious, already-been-done solutions.
An ideation table allows for the generation of ideas. The main goal is to spark innovation and draw out a sense of creativity by bringing a team together to openly discuss and share ideas without competition, judgement, or individualism - there will be time to that later.
That being said, design is challenging, unique, emotional, and highly individualized so coming to the table is a change for most creative types and brings them out of their comfort zone.
