This post is a compilation of My Passport one off ideas that were explored over the last few years. As a designer, you get an idea in your head and you want to see what it looks like with some thought put behind it. You just need some free time to do so. Below are a few ideas from past years.
Digital IMD - in-mold decoration
By using end of life product tools, no tooling would be required for a limited edition licensed product that can be sold at a premium.
Molded-in texture exploration
Inlays with high gloss contrast
I visited the NAMM Show, the National Association of Music Merchants, and the hand finished guitar wood inlay look interred me.
Soft goods approach
No tooling. Yes I can sew. I once wanted to refinish a mid-century couch so I bought a sewing machine.
No Injection molding
The below concept was an exploration on what an enclosure would look like if NO MOLDED parts were used - metal base - sheet metal side - fabric side wrap - wood top. OK - the plywood version has one small simple part - machined wood body - polished metal base. The third version has a simple bottom HDD tray - wood top - and a colored end cap that secures the assembly together.
Wall Hanger
This version plays with textured, polished, and matte plastic making the device seem more complex than it is and breaks up the top surface area. Also, a soft leather strap gives a color accent and can unclip for the side, to extend out, creating a hanging HDD to clean up your tabletop if space is an issue.
