Pancreas Power

Beta Bionics is the first medtech company to incorporate as a public benefit corporation. Made with humanity. Unlike traditional corporations, Beta Bionics is certified by B Lab® to ensure they meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance purpose with profit.

This design exercise focused around the Beta Bionics glucose monitor and was equipped with wireless charging capability. The monitor didn’t have a wide range of inductive charging power so the distance between sender and receiver coils needed to be exact unlike a $1000 cellphone that his more room for placement error.

The design challenge was to create a cradle that explored simple to multi-part housings that centered around an off-the-shelf ETL certified base.

Reductions in blood glucose levels in people with diabetes are often achieved at the expense of increased hypoglycemia. A novel approach is to automatically deliver microdose glucagon when automation of insulin delivery alone is not sufficient to prevent hypoglycemia. The approach requires a bihormonal device and a stable form of glucagon or glucagon analog. The iLet bionic pancreas is a purpose-built, fully integrated device that receives a signal from a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and contains autonomous, lifelong learning, mathematical dosing algorithms, which are initialized only with the patient’s body weight. Welcome to Beta Bionics.

An off the shelf charger was selected so that internal resources were NOT used to design a charging base that was already available. ETL Certified. Qi Certified. Built in over-current and short circuit protection.

ABOUT RYAN

Being a Designer, I believe in exploring ideas from scratch – “from cardboard” if necessary. The mistakes made and thus the lessons learned from the rough first tries only builds knowledge from these trial and errors. I believe and thrive in the live / learn by doing process.
