Thanksgiving "time" Project

Updated: Jun 25, 2021

A sheet of 6mm birch plywood - a laser cutter - and some intricate adhesion creates a fun architectonic time piece for the family wall.

Its another holiday season and with a little down time I thought I would transform an idea into physical parts and create a clock to replace the old one that has been void of accurate time for a few years now.

Inspiration

Most of my home projects revolve around a comment to my wife that sounds something like, "I couldn't find anything that I liked so I'm just going to make one" followed by "O - of course you are."

Below are a few quick renderings exploring perimeter indicator shapes. The shape that I went with was one that could be nested together and reduced the cut time and material size.

If I do proceed and create a few more prototypes I will stain the front face in a walnut to match the burnt laser cut edges.

The inspiration was a kids project that revolved around a DYI Japanese paper lantern out of construction paper that was squashed:) There are so many possibilities with shapes around the outer perimeter. I tried to allow the shapes to nest/stack to keep the cost and cutting time down, but that didn't work out as originally planned.

Template created in Illustrator with the end result. Nothing fancy.

I settled on replacing the standard white hands with a copper look along with rounding the ends and a RED second hand. The shadows that are created are the most dramatic feature of this piece. The baltic birch plywood and brown (burnt from the laser cutter) creates a fantastic contrast between materials and finishes that are left natural. The smell isn't so appealing though.

New clock...
