Cataract Surgery - Wavetec is a ophthalmic medical device company and is the proven leader in intraoperative wavefront technology. The company is focused on research, development, manufacturing, and distribution of the ORA System® with VerifEye™ (Optiwave® Refractive Analysis) used during cataract surgery. I helped them with a handful of small design projects helping them explore and problem solve issues in a cost effective manner.

Lever redesign
Project 01 was to take a look at the existing locking mechanism that secures the aberrometer to the underside of a microscope. The key points of this lever exploration included the blending of the new lever body into the existing body housing, allowing the lever to be easily be opened/closed, and utilizing the existing locking mechanism. Below are the Phase I concepts. The final takeaway want that I proposed the thinning down of the light plastic housing (without proposing a new design) and exposing the machined aluminum dark base so to utilize this material as a design feature. By exposing this dark edge, the visual mass and cover thickness can be greatly reduced.

Led Design Project
Below are concepts for the GEN 3 release for how to add an LED bezel around the lens opening yet not interfering with the surgeons view to the patient.
